Hundreds of avid local and international sportsmen and athletes united in conquest in one of the biggest and much-awaited sports events of the year the 2nd Brunei Tasek Climbathon 2011.
Organised by Blue Waters Advertising Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and support from various government agencies and associations, the race was aimed at encouraging members of the public to donate to charity and practise a healthy lifestyle by putting on their sports shoes and braving through some of the rugged peaks at Tasek Lama, in the ambience of the pristine rainforest in the heart of Brunei Darussalam.
Categories were divided into Men's Open, Women's Open, Men's Veteran Open, Fun Runners and Interschool boys and girls that covered distances ranging from 1.5km to 6.5km, as well as Best Blogger Contest and Highest Fund Raiser.
Dionysius Wee, co-chairman of the Brunei Tasek Climbathon began the charity race with an opening speech, followed by a warm-up session led by Fitness Zone and musical performance by Yiena, who sang 'When You Believe.'
Present to kick start the event was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Hazair bin Hj Abdullah, as the guest of honour who also witnessed the presentation of proceeds to Pusat Ehsan's Acting Chairman of Board of Trustees, Dato Paduka Mohd Alimin Abd Wahab, Pusat Bahagia and funds for training the unemployed.
The charity race also saw a number of performances from Brunei Tai Chi Association, local artistes and some 300 volunteers from various sectors.
Philip Ronoh emerged as the winner in the Men's Open category with a record time of 28:35:00 minutes while Pearl Lim Ching Tieng dominated the Women's Open Category with a record time of 47:00:00 minutes. Both received medals and cheques of $500 each.
Other winners comprised Md Nur Erdyman bin Embran in Interschool Boys' category (8 to 12 years), Israa Sultan in Interschool Girls' Category (8 to 12 years), Md Shariffudin bin Md Salleh in Interschool Boys' category (13 to 17 years) and Nur Farah Hana bte Md Abiddin in Interschool Girls' category (13 to 17 years).
The minister then handed over the medals and participation certificates to runners-up, as well as received a token of appreciation from Dionysius Wee, co-chairman of the Brunei Tasek Climbathon and in his capacity as mentor of Blue Waters Advertising Sdn Bhd.
